The Race to the Mailbox
Every single day, despite zero evidence that something other than junk mail will arrive, my husband and I have a quiet race to the mailbox. I think we’ve been habitually doing it since we were kids. Letters from camp friends, love letters from long-distance relationships, mail-order trinkets and baseball cards, and my teenage favorite, the beloved J.Crew catalog. Mail used to be so good!
I grew up saving my babysitting money for stationery and stickers. One piece to collect and one to send, often to my cousin in Minneapolis. She was my older, two steps ahead, inspiring, and city-cool cousin. And for years, there was a steady stream of letters back and forth.
We were born cousins but became friends by mail. Bridesmaids in each other’s weddings. Both getting our first teaching jobs. Witnesses to each other’s young lives. Pen pals.
And then technology came along, and somehow over time we stopped writing for good and settled for the occasional picture and social media update.
I’ve been thinking about that lately. A lot. And longing for some analog creativity and connection.
Something Old and New
So I started looking for all my old inspiration and art supplies.
As I was digging through boxes from the dungeon, I found my first recipe box from the 90s. Handwritten on index cards in other people’s handwriting were little time capsules and nostalgic food memories.
I also found my sticker and stationery collection, which was surprisingly full of kittens (if Birdie, our bernedoodle, even knew) and so many rainbows.
And I started to think: What if I just started mailing things again?
A letter, a recipe, paper delights, art, and conversations to have around our tables and circles collectively. From our hands to your hands. Things to touch, share, and add a little joy to the ordinary.
She Mailed It Subscription
Once a month, Ella and I will be sending out envelopes filled with intentional gifts and treasures we’ve gathered, created, and chosen with you in mind.
Every month you’ll open:
- A personal letter from me, Heather. (And sometimes Ella, too.) The real, honest, and truthy kind we’d write to our best friends.
- A recipe. Something we’re currently making and loving to eat that isn’t on the blog yet.
- A piece of art or poetry. From our family or guest artist submissions and from makers I can’t wait for you to meet, read, hear, or witness (always with permission).
- A seasonal surprise or two. Little treasures that fit in an envelope for you to use, make, collect, or share. (Think stickers, stationery, postcards, gift tags, bookmarks, collage items, DIY.)
- A little food for thought. A quote, a question for the table, a life list, a journal prompt. Something to sit with, circle around, share with a friend, or carry with you.
Art by Ashley Mary, commissioned for She Made It She Might over a decade ago. Full circle.
